Dear Yesterday,

Thank you for getting me home safely. It was relentless, from the moment I opened my eyes until after midnight when I flopped into bed, barely remembering to remove my contacts. I know I traversed time zones, clearing clouds high up in the sky. I know I ran from thing to thing, squeezing in kid kisses between landing and leaving again, wondering if I would find time to post a photo or a little recording as a Slice. I didn’t. I’m telling myself not to be such a completionist.

Yesterday, I really appreciated the temperature when I landed back in Chicago. I wore only a sweatshirt. Thank you too for allowing the party I planned for my husband’s 40th to go off without a hitch. The surprise worked; he enjoyed himself. Let me channel gratitude too for our dear friends, who flew in from Jersey to doubly surprise. That went smoothly too.

My dear 24 hours, sweet sweet March 4th: thanks for coming and going without too much ado. Thanks for being busy. Thanks for the opportunity to live.

Love,

Nawal

  1. Nawal, where do I begin? Your writing is simply astounding and your depth of reflection amidst the hustle and bustle of life is beautiful. When you wrote, "I’m trying to tell myself not to be such a completionist" my draw dropped. Your photos tied this lovely gem in a nice neat bow. Glad you got to celebrate your guy with good friends. I’m super glad Mar. 4 gave you the opportunity to fully live.

  2. Love everything about this — and am going to totally start using the word completionist! So glad the day was wonderful and that you have the weekend to rest and regroup!

  3. Did you know March 4th is the only day of the year that is a command? Seems like a good way to write about it! YOu can be an almost completionist!

  4. Nawal, it’s so good to see you back writing here. I love the yesterday post. I’m so glad you captured the special day with this post, even a day later than you had wished to post it. So much lovely gratitude expressed in your post. Happy birthday to your hubby, too!
