Been ruminating on language and literacy development and how multimodal, personal, and individualized it all is. My brain is mush right now but I am building a visual that represents my journey- just one version of a dozen iterations I’ve attempted recently- while thinking about the people, places, text and moments across my life that shaped my repertoire of literacy skills (reading people included). I’m thinking always about cultivating welcoming spaces for students to grow their own language and literacy practices in ways that allow them to show up wholly and safely. Here are two incongruous videos that shaped me as a child, whose lyrics and melodies will never leave the soup of memories in my brain. Please enjoy a little Googoosh and Tori Amos while I continue to brainstorm.

  1. This visual you are working on sounds incredible. The ‘soup of memories’ in your brain reflect the depth and complexity of your spirit. Your ability to read people is a gift that expands your repertoire of literacy skills, moment by moment. I can’t wait to read this book you are working on. Creating spaces for kids to show up wholly and safely is such a meaningful goal.
